The photography opportunities on a trip are immense. Photography is permitted nearly everywhere in Bhutan and the local population has no aversion to being photographed. If you wish to record the local population, their houses, shops etc, always ask by gestures if it is okay to do so. Photography inside the Dzongs and Monasteries are not permitted. Please follow your guide’s instruction carefully while visiting Dzongs, monasteries and religious institution. Of late, the Royal Government encourages the filming groups. Any commercial Filming must pay a royalty to obtain the permit from the Royal Government of Bhutan. Mythical Bhutan Travels will assist you to get the permit. Filming royalty: All proposals for filming are subjected to payment of a royalty at the following rates:
The rules and rates for filming in Bhutan differ from that of the normal treks and tours. Tourists or professionals’ intent on filming in Bhutan must abide by the Bhutan Filming Regulations, 1995, available with implementing agency, the Tourism Authority of Bhutan.
The regulation does not apply to feature and cinematographic films
Applications for a filming permit must be submitted to the Tourism Authority of Bhutan at least 30 days in advance. The application must be accompanied by:
(a) Synopsis of the film – theme/background/objective/purpose
(b) Specific locations/objects/activities
(c) Composition of the filming team and the list of equipment including accessories and consumables (Filming crew members have to pay full daily tourist tariff)
(d) Letter of recommendation from the sponsoring agency (application forms can be obtained from TCB on payment of Nu.300.00 or equivalent of US$ 10)
ROYALTY ON FILMING:
1: First 30 minutes or part thereof – US$ 10,000
2: Next 30 minutes or part thereof – US$ 6,000
3: Every additional 30 minutes or part thereof – US$ 3,000
In addition a security deposit of US$ 5,000 must be deposited with TCB. This deposit will be refunded upon completion of the film to the satisfaction of the TCB.
